The Tesla Model X is an all-electric luxury SUV crossover. Marketed as the fastest and safest available. Thanks, in part to several systems such as Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Looking Camera, Front Bumper Radar Sensor, and Ultra-Sonic Sensors (blind spot monitoring) mounted in all four corners of the car. This car also has performance capabilities of zero to sixty mph in 2.9 seconds. This is possible due to electric motors capability of delivering 100% of all available torque instantly. This is where sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) comes into play.
Of 16,000 units delivered in one year, the Model X has already had 8 documented occurrences. 7 of which have resulted in crashes. That would be equivalent to 62 per 100,000 vehicles. The normal rate of SUA is 1 per 100,000 vehicles. Of these cases involving crashes, all have involved a normal situation of parking the car and The Model X has independently and inadvertently applied what appears to be 100% acceleration. Causing one man to drive from his garage into his own living room! Leaving himself and his son trapped inside the car with the doors blocked by the interior walls of the home and the Model X cabin saturated with smoke from airbag deployment. In these situations, all the marketed safety systems have failed. Radar, forward camera, automatic emergency braking etc. Tesla Motors appears to be claiming plausible deniability due to driver error and pedal misapplication. However, that doesn’t refute the unknown failure of the Electric Motor Control System and or the obvious failure the previously stated safety systems that make the Model X the Safest SUV available today.
