On November 4th, 2016, Samsung announced a recall of 34 different models of top loading washing machines. Which also lead to a class action lawsuit being filed in California against Samsung, BestBuy, Home Depot, and Sears. Samsung’s stated reason for the recall is the top can detach from the chassis of the machine during the highest speed spin cycle. Therefore posing a risk of an impact injury. There have been 733 reports of the top coming off the machine. 9 reports of injuries. Including a broken jaw and an injured shoulder and other fall-related injuries.
Samsung is offering 3 different remedies for this recall. 1. In home repair which includes reinforcement of the top and a free one-year extension of factory warranty. 2. Rebate to be applied towards the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine. Along with free installation of new unit and removal of old unit. 3. A full refund for consumers who purchased one of these washers within 30 days prior to recall notice being issued.
